I have to chime in here to second Evangelion. Which is still my favorite. Add to the list Hellsing (there are two versions, the original is better), Gantz and Berserk. Gantz is almost as screwed up as Evangelion, but without needing to become a theological scholar during the screening.

P.S. None of these are honestly child-friendly, but Gantz has a lot of really really un-child-friendly stuff in it. Just thought I would note that up front.

Ogre, I would be willing to put money that everyone was running Zone Alarm as a common denominator. ZA updated the night before and whatever they did clashed with the XP update the next day. It was a nightmare, my phone did not stop ringing for 3 days.

However in testing new firewalls, Comodo is starting to look better anyways.

Oh and skaramine, if you have not heard the second CD that came with the Glorious Burden digipack, hunt it down. Iced Earth is headed back to even more greatness, as Barlowe is coming back!

Ogre, you cost me money having gotten my hooked on Beltaine when you posted it a couple months ago. So to return the favor try Blind Gaurdian and Demons & Wizards (which is Jon Schafer from Iced Earth and Hansi from BG). BG is without doubt my favorite metal.

Demons & Wizards:
Stupid WoW Video, awesome song.

Under other circumstances, no they would not be much of a threat. The location of the country, the mentality of the people and the fact that, unlike Iraq and A'Stan, they are in possession of a much higher trained and equipped military force makes them a force to be worried about. Were I in Israel, I would be at least a little concerned. As of 2004 (the most recent information I have read), we had no true intelligence as to biological capabilities, and they absolutely have the most dangerous asymmetric warfare machine in the middle east. Add to that an unknown ability for enriching nuclear material and....

A war on three fronts is nearly impossible to win without overwhelming force, and in the middle east that means manpower, which we do not have to spare. So given the current situation, yes indeed, they would be significant force. Add in the unknown variables of a bio/nuclear nature and you have something to loose sleep over in the region.

Re: Old Games

Just FYI folks you CAN make XP pretend to play nice with old DOS games and things meant to run on 95-98, by adding the line:

mem=ram

To your config file. This causes XP to allocate some of the gobs of RAM most modern computers have to 'virtual memory' and generally keeps older games (especially those running in a DOS window) running halfway decently. Alternatively you could put a limiter on your CPU to make it run slower while running older games, while doing essentially nothing (except being yet another entry into the already bloated registry).

Also check for patches, I know Half-Life came out with some ungodly large (80+ megs) patch to make running in XP easier before putting out compilations, and I am sure they can not be the only ones.

I have been playing Betrayal at Krondor for years this way :-) And I will never give up Krondor!

Have to say that while I do not come close to buying into the whole 'perfection' thing, the G19 is about as close to a perfect fit in my hands as anything I have yet tried. And it does work every time. But I know of too many people for whom the fit is lousy to call them perfect.

I came late to the MHI party stupidly (though I read Nightcrawler and Corriea on THR). I devoured that thing in about 12 hours, waited 2 days and read it again. I think I will be on my 4th go around soon.

I am generally sold on Cisco as a rule, probably because I am used to it more than anything else. But then I am also mainly a residential geek, so I configure small networks more than anything else and (unless the customer went and bought some kind of crap they refuse to allow me to upgrade) use Linksys stuff even there.

Re: XD9 or M&P9?

June 24, 2008 by armenius

I like my HK, but (a big but here) I got it used (and not shot much) for 400 bucks (which, at the same price as a similar condition Glock, is a lot more in tune with reality). While the XD feels like a split 2x4 in my hand, I have witnessed (and shot some) of the accuracy and reliability. The M&P seems a little pricey and honestly not that much better fitting to my hand.

Really need to get my hands around one of those FN's Ogre keeps on about. That and tne new line of XD's look pretty good.

Re: Clive Cussler

June 24, 2008 by armenius

This made me think of something. I do not know Ogre outside of having read his blog and THR for years now, but I think he (and many of the horde) would probably enjoy some David Drake...

Interesting military fiction, has been sucking me into his stuff for years (his fantasy series is not terrible, but not great).

OT, I like Cussler, but I have never really been 'sucked in' as I have been with other authors.

Re: .30-30 or 7.62x39?

June 23, 2008 by armenius

Have to go 7.62x39. Still one of the cheapest in centerfire rifle rounds, softpoints for the hunters work for the stockpilers as well...

30-30 has its place, took my first deer many moons ago with one, but I can not afford to have a thousand of them on hand all the time, and I prefer bolt and semi-auto rifles.

A more apt answer from me would be 7.62x39 because of platform, cost and the fact that there is not enough difference between them to make me want both.
