I was trying to save some cash at the range so I picked up a Mosquito. I had $425 in gift checks from work so I went to Martin B. Retting in Culver City wanting to pick up a used 12g and got the sig instead. Its a cool gun to shoot. It beats using my Gamo pellet gun out back and is way cheaper than a 45 or 9. I'm just having a slight problem sighting in. I'm wearing reading glass now and it seems like I have to retrain my eyes. Is that normal? I haven't really shot since the Corps in the early 80's so things are different with my eyes. I tried left, right and both. I'm not using my glasses. Any tips?
That is, unfortunately, quite normal.
If you normally don't wear glasses, then you should practice without them... shoot with both eyes open.
What you want to do is work on your handgunning Natural Point of Aim. Meaning you grip the gun the same way every time. You bring the gun up to eye level the same way every time. And you work the trigger the same way every time. Train yourself on this, learn where you hit, and apply that to the target. It takes time, but eventually you will work it out so that you are not looking at your sights, but you are aware of where they are and you are concentrating on your target. Everything else should be muscle memory.
Now, if you are working on specifically target shooting, well, you picked the wrong .22 for that... the Sig's fun, but it isn't a bullseye gun. But say you still want to do that. Again, you are going to work on your consistency, but here your focus is on the sight picture. You will shoot with one eye. What can help you is a shooting aperture...

I bought my wife one of the early Mosquitos for Christmas last year. It's a decent plinker and a good trainer if you have/want a 226 or a 229. The DA trigger is a handicap for any serious shooting and the barrel comes loose after a brick or 2, so you might want to keep an eye out for some barrel wobble. I picked up the Gemtech barrel so I can use my suppressor. SIG was hit & miss with the early Mosquitos so I hope you did get a good one. My wife's is very ammo sensitive. I myself shoot with glasses and it does take some time getting used to, but stick with it and if possible get a lesson or 2 from an instructor. If you find someone who knows what they are doing then you won't believe how much you really don't know about proper shooting. There are a lot of "armchair quarterbacks" out there so it might take some research but it will be more than worth it.
