How about once a solider is done with a deployment or his time is up, he get the option of purchasing his service weapon. (providing its not a SAW or something) Now I think the M4 is a piece of shit, but I probably would have bought it from sentimental reasons.

If given access to their weapons ALL returning servicemen would almost instantly start robbing banks and go on spree killings. Just like the Izzies and Swiss.

Why not let them keep a SAW?

Oh, I'd love to have kept my saw, but I was thinking realistically. They'd never let us legally keep that. (and it'd be too expensive for me.) But hell yeah I'd love it.

The legality of keeping the SAW is the same as keeping that tiny M4. The gestapo classifies both as machineguns.

If it's just an M4 or similar a soldier shouldn't have to buy it when he finishes his army career, he should be given it. Unless he's thrown out of course. If you make them pay to keep their rifles some politician will decide its a good way to raise revenue and jack up the price.
Perhaps those who have served longer could be given more choice in what they can keep. For example, serve five years and get an M4, serve ten and get a SAW.

That'll be the day. Why give or sell them to Joe when they can get what they paid for them selling them to third world countries that buy them with $ we loan them?
That, and how many Joes would pay the tax stamp?
I had guys interested in buying our M24s when they went away for the SASSs. Boltguns fer chrissakes!and there wasn't a way to do it.
On the same note, last Summer we had a woman approach our Bn. because her husband was in it in WWII in the Pacific. She had his BAR and Thompson he'd just walked off the boat with when he got home! How cool is that?
My dad scored his .45, a Nambu, a .30 Carbine, two Arisakas and a sword...but a BAR? That's serious.
Good idea though Khorne.

Hm, wouldn't the military lose money by soldiers taking their weapons with them when they leave the service (unless you pay for the gun out of your own pocket when you enlist)?

Yeah the liberals would never buy into this plan. Because clearly anyone who's ever served in the military MUST be mentally ill from that traumatic experience and that certainly is not the type of person you want "armed to the teeth" (as if anyone carrying an M4 is "armed to the teeth")... I mean every GI is the wounded Rambo type right? ...A bundle of raw nerves ready to explode in a post-traumatic stress disorder induced blind rage right?

Dude, you look like an Imperial Space Marine in that armor.

As far as the idea goes... I believe once you graduate Boot, you should be given a side arm, a knife, and a rifle... These go with you, always. Since the Oath we have sworn does not expire, you should always be expected to be proficient with your weapons.

I look like a space marine with a pea-shooter. Look how freaking tiny that gun looks! I've also come to the conclusion that I don't like 3-point slings that much. Too bulky and always gets in the way. I prefer a one-point sling. I know this is a fantasy topic because the Army and the Government just aren't that cool anymore.

When it comes to slings... I have always liked the simple quick adjustable two point sling.
Larry Vickers has taken up that opinion as well and is the new Champion of it.
But I was rolling quick adjustable two point slings that I made, all the way back in 1987. I made a sling attach point that went through the CAR-15's front sight riser, used two GI slings, buckled together with one easy adjustment point and attached the rear around the CAR-15's stock like you see often to this day.
I wasn't the only one who did this. Several of us Light Infantry Grunts rigged our weapons this way. It worked for the M-60, the M-209, whatever weapon you had to pack. You could have it over your shoulder, down along your side, across your front, however you had to work, and you could have it up and in action in a blink.

Here, here on the two point.
The problem with the old school fix, which most of us used, was one; sight picture could be occluded, and two; if you had to rock and roll, the heated gas tube would often melt the sling, or 550 cord, depending on how you rigged it. That's where that wire rig they issued in the early 90s came in handy. The side mount swivels we have today obviously squared this away.
I like the one point, though cheapskate that I am, when I go one point I use 550 and a carabiner (doesn't work too well without an IBA)The shortcoming is when you're searching, or securing badguys, keeping your weapon out of the way is a bitch. SO, that's why I like the two point, but that's just me. And MSG Vickers. And Ogres everywhere.

I had taken a sling attachement bracket that they used for the M-60, modified that, and used that for my CAR-15. Worked. The wire rig they issued in the 90's was simpler, but basically the same idea. The 550 cord, yeah, that's why I went with the wire. I saw the cord melt fiasco once. LOL... that was awesome. Melted, then smoked, then caught fire... ignited the hand guard. We just watched it burn and kept shooting.
Good times.

The relatively small size of your gun makes you look more like a marine, or Adeptus Astartes. Those guys are eight feet tall without their armour.
Question is can you spit acid too?

No, but I do have fangs and I'll go crazy after a while and have to be put in a berserker squad.

Dark Angels, no-one beats the Unforgiven for sinister.
Plus I do Praetorian Imperial Guard, and like to keep my hand in with the other armies too.
I'm known at my regular GW store as the biggest tread-head in the area, evrything from light war buggies to titans (proper 28mm 40k scale too, not 6mm epic).
