Predator Calls

I've been playing around with my predator calls lately... getting itchy for some more serious coyote hunting as the temperatures start to cool from our summer highs.
For mouth calls, I've decided that I have some distinct favorites, and it turns out they are Primos calls.
I'm grooving on the "Ky-Yi" call... It's an orange plastic call in two parts that gives you wide range of call sounds you can make. Pup Yips, come to dinner calls... if you want just one call, make it this one.
The other one I really like is the "Cat-Nip". This is a small call with a soft plastic horn... does great and can make lots of different call sounds including duck and elk. No, I'm not kidding. Has a good high tone, and it carries well.
Another good one I like is the "Coyote Bear Buster". This one is a green plastic tube that has a more raspy lower tone.
For electronics, you can spend a lot of money on the Fox Pro or Phantom units and they are great. If you can budget them. The one I have is a Cass Creek Nomad with a remote that I use in conjuction with a Big Horn loud speaker. The reason I like the remote electronic calls best is that they are simple, easy to use, you can screw up a call and spook a dog, and best yet, they take the dogs attention off your location and plant it on another location. I use this call the most. And when I do, I like to offer the dog something else to catch and keep it's attention. Like a scent or something to decoy the dog, like something furry.
If you have moving dog and you want to stop it... sometimes I don't even make a call. I just yell "Hey, stop!" And quite often the dog, who hasnt heard my voice up till that point will stop in his tracks and turn to look to see where the people are. The instant the dog stops - break the shot - because he wont be stopped for long and once he moves, he aint stopping again... he's out of there.
