I have a chance to pickup a Mossy 500A with 28" ribbed barrel, only a couple dozen shell have been run through it. 5+1 mag.
I'd like to put a 20", plus 7+1 mag on it.
Question is can I get a 8 round mag tube and 20" barrel for it ?
Oh, the guy wants $150 for the shotgun.
You can buy the gun new for 299 or so... so 150 is a good deal. If you want a 28" Ribbed gun.
Yes, you can get the barrel for it, and extentions and all that... but if you want to do that, go buy a 590... Unless you want to get nickled and dimed.
I'd just go with a 590A1, with the ghost ring sights. You get the extended mag tube, a metal safety, a bayonet lug, parkerizing, a thicker barrel, and a more convential barrel attachment.
Plus, the Marines use it, so it's pretty badass.
The Mossberg 500 has a mag tube unlike many other shotguns...you can't easily add an extension, you have to change the whole mag tube itself. Plus, I don't like the way the barrel attaches to the mag tube on the 500. I'd just go with a 590A1, with the ghost ring sights. $150 is slightly too much for a used Mossberg. Although the magazine tube is something you could change yourself (unlike a Remington), you'd be better off buying a new one in the configuration you want.

Ah, you can easily add an extension to the Remington 870. You have to get rid of the mag tube dimples on a standard Epress. Some Express HD shotguns come from the factory with no dimples and a mag extension, or you can buy a Police or Wingmaster gun, both come without the dimples. You should be able to find a nice used Express for not too much, and be able to refinish it if necessary...
THe only reason I don't have an extension on my 870 is that I like the balance the way it is.
But, right, I think $150 is too much for a Mossberg 500A...
I think I'd just get the 18.5" for $70 if I went that way.
$209 NIB at Academy for a 500 Field. 150 is a bit steep. Esp when it'll cost you 100 in parts to get a 8 shot capacity. I got an 870 (and a job incidentally) at a local pawn shop for $150. A hack saw, $20 limbsaver and a $40 choate extension later i have an 18" riot gun with a 7 shot cap, and im in it less than 2/3 an 870 police. plus I dig the wood stocks over synthetic. I'd look around some. Several good ole used shotty's can be had for under $150.

I didn't say you couldn't. I said you couldn't easily change the magazine. The magazine tube itself can be unscrewed and replaced with another by an end user. The same isn't true of an 870.

Are you sure about that? I've never tried to add an extended mag to an 870, but I have taken a magazine extension (factory) off of an 870 and replaced it with a standard mag cap with no modifications, and I have seen a sack full of 870's with after market extended mags. I thought most of them were just screw on replacements.
