Ok guys, opinions please. I was needing a lil bigger ride for me and the kids, giving the old nissan pickup a new home. Found a sweet 94 Jeep Cherokee that a friend of mine has had for a while and letting it live at my house. 4.0 HO I6 quadtrack transfer case, new motor put in that has about 60 grand on it. Bad deal or good runaround ride?

It has the right engine... That's the one you want. I would say go for it. Its one of the best Jeeps they made.

Thanks Ogre. Ive already haggled out my deal for it, just waiting to get off call monday so i can get the title's and crap dealt with. Its a shame sometimes that our automotive manufacturing geniuses can build such a great off road/on road ride that turns around almost in its on length and then suddenly drop it and replace it with an underpowered, plasticized chickride. Having been a Jeep man for many years I would tell anyone to by a Jeep with the I6. They stopped making the engine because it was too good. The 3.7 V6 is a PoS. The only thing that you may have to keep an eye out for with the Cherokee is the chasis harness. It's a bitch to get at and I've had problems with my Dad's Cherokee, specifically with the head light/tail lights. There's a relay back there that can fail. If there is a good automitive wiring shop in you area then no worries.

Overall they are easy to work on, there are tons of aftermarket and MOPAR parts avaialable for reasonable prices and if you maintain them properly they pretty much can last forever.

Enjoy, Jeeps are a way of life like Harley Davidson.

Pretty much a universal rule of thumb is that if there is an inline six engine option, that's the one to take.
From the old Ford trucks to Toyota Supra's and even in BMW's...

The inline six... something about that configuration just makes for a fantastic engine. Even better - dare I say it - than the beloved V-8 configuration.

Check the rear shock mounts for rust. One of the few week spots and a bitch to fix.

thanks alot guys for all the info. I picked up the lil jewel last monday, and after i do a few odds and ends ill let her roll for a while. 94 I6, command trac (my mistake saying quadtrac before), no rust in the rear shock mounts, and actually a well taken care of vehicle. gonna flush out the tranny and coolant this week and she should be ready for another hundred thousand.

Mobile One Pure Synthetic in the crank case... K&N filter in the airbox... your set.

True on the K&N. Just remember one thing guys. Keep cool OUTSIDE air running to the air filter. When you install one of those filter/high flow hose kits straight to the intake you take away horsepower gains by letting the engine digest the hotter air around the engine.

That's absolutely true... you gotta build a cold air box.
