Maxtor Hard Drives

Maxtor? Maxtor was brought by Seagate a number of years ago, I'm not sure how a new computer got a Maxtor in it. I personally have a number of Maxtor drives and I have never had any problems with them but I've heard stories about people's Maxtor's failing.

Hmm, newish computer. New in Box, but I didn't sell it right when I bought it. Maybe 2 years old. I fired it up to make sure everything worked, and then yesterday when I was settng the thing up... no boot device. The crazy lady I was helping was a computer hating life would be simpler sot of person too. I had shopped around to find her the best deal I could on a large monitor as she wanted it (the computer) to write on. She categorically refused to buy a widescreen monitor, she wanted, demanded a 4:3 monitor. Nobody sells those! Four hours of shopping for accessories, and I was ready to solve her need for a computer.

I only buy Western Digital. There was a little tiff about Chinese Maxtors with worms built in to phone home to China every once in awhile.... reporting data.
Considering Lenovo laptops did that too. Lenovo built Thinkpads for IBM and then IBM turned the whole brand over to Lenovo and as soon as they did that, they caught these Chinese built Thinkpads at the Pentagon calling back to China. That's why you couldn't take Thinkpads into the Pentagon. I don't know if they dropped that little ban.
I really don't trust the Chinese. Chinese companies are still owned by China... they are communist... they are not our Friends... and they are doing everything they can to know everything they can about everything we do.

Run away!!! I'm with Ogre on this one. Western Digital and even Seagate are the way to go.
